I learned plenty outside of the classroom. Back then it was customary to "work your way" through college. I had a job at the local daily newspaper, and I learned a lot there.
Like everybody else, I had some great classes and some of the other kind. Others were sort of in between. That is, I learned some valuable stuff, but didn't have much fun doing it.
The most enjoyable thing about college was my family's reaction. They never expected me to start college, much less stick with it and graduate. I don't mean just my immediate family. There were aunts, uncles, and cousins who were, to say the least, surprised.
Money was tight, so I learned how to squeeze the miles out of a buck. Maybe that was the most important thing I learned.
Like so many things, I wouldn't take anything for the experience, but I'd sure hate to have to do it again. Howard
