Everything I've seen official about that suggests it will the musical. Furthermore, Johnny Depp will be Sweeney. (See link below.)

I'm hoping this turns out well. In response to Sam, there are of course the filmed stagings of the original casts of "Sunday in the Park with George," "Into the Woods," and "Passion," as well as a filmed version of the touring production of "Sweeney Todd" (which has Angela Lansbury, but George Hearn is Sweeney rather than Len Cariou), but they're just what they sound like. (Good DVDs to see, though.) I'd like to see the film version, but it doesn't take much browsing of the IMDb boards to see that many people are panicking about Depp's singing ability.
