There have been a lot of "spinoffs" of the said series... The Journey to the West, Dragon Ball Z, and Archie Comics tried to incorporate the side story into their Sonic the Hedgehog comics.
(I'm Bo Bayles, by the way, new to the forum. I'll get to introductions later...)
The story of the Monkey King, "Songokou", is a Chinese legend, that was made into several shows. All of them had the basic plot. Dragon Ball had Son Goku, his friends Bulma (a normal human girl), Oolong, a pig, and Kurirun, a Buddhist monk. The legend had a journey of Songokou on his magical cloud, trying to collect artifacts that would give them a wish (a la Wizard of Oz). On the way, they encounter several obstacle, such as an eternally burning mountain. The fire was put out using one of the artifacts, a fan.
Dragon Ball had Son Goku ride a magical cloud, Kintoen, in search for the Dragon Balls, which would grant him one wish. He also encountered a burning mountain, but an old martial arts master put the fires out with a special blast of energy (the Kame Hame Ha).
The Archie Sonic series had a monkey named Khan try to fight Sonic (a blue hedgehog from a video game), but Sonic refused. Khan also rides a magical cloud, and puts out an eternally burning mountain.
There was also a Japanese cartoon brought to the US called Journey to the West, with more accuracy to the original legend.
As you can see, it's quite a popular story.
