I worked in retail for a long time, and there is one thing I learned very well: extremes in temperament are much more prevalent among older people, and there are very few in the middle. Somebody who is old and nice will be one of the nicest people you could possibly meet. Somebody who is old and nasty will be one of the nastiest people you could possibly meet.
