You need to get back to the dining room in time for dinner - which means a certain number of moves outside the boarding house before going back in. Time doesn't advance til you leave the boarding house, so you can't run up and down the stairs. I haven't been able to pin down the number of moves, but if you make more than 8, you'll be late for dinner. Just try again the next day if you can't make it.
