My first exposure to MST3K was with Mike as the host. I think Comedy Central was shopping MST3K around to a bunch of universities to get more viewers for the show. My first exposure was an actual movie! The movie was episode 519 "Outlaw", one of the few Mike eps with an invention exchange. Everyone in the theater audience went wild.

About a year later, the evil cable company decided to upgrade their service to carry more than 35 channels. TCA Cable planned a rollout in stages: this part of town would be upgraded, then months later this area, then later this area. So we finally got Comedy Channel - for a month, 'cause our lease was up and we moved 'cross town. There, we waited for something like eight months before we got the station -- the day CC announced the cancellation of MST3K.

"Argh," I said. "Argh."

Oh, wait, what was the question again? Oh yeah, Mike. I've seen a few Joel episodes, but I've seen almost all of the Mike ones. I didn't like Pearl Forrester when she was first on the show, but she did grow on me. However, as far as bad guys go, I'd prefer Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank.
