Another steep hill

There was another steep hill in Hazard. (The link below will take you to an old post of mine that included a link to the Hazard site.)
I was involved in a car wreck on Baker Hill. Again it was brake failure. It was during WWII and brakes were not very good in those days. Also, most of the good mechanics were off fighting the war. Beside, car parts were in short supply.
We were on our way to a funeral in a 1936 Plymouth. The driver was a sailor who was at home on leave. He had borrowed the car from the man who ran the neighborhood grocery.
So there we were at the top of Baker Hill, with a line of cars in front of us, and no brakes. At the bottom of the hill there was a sharp right turn. Going straight would have caused several cars to land on top of a service station below the turn. So the driver plowed into the back of a 1941 Chevy coupe that was parked with the wheel turned into the curb and the brakes set.
It was a terrible crash. The Plymouth engine wound up in the trunk of the Chevy. I was in the passenger seat so my head destroyed the windshield. My mother and two sisters were in the back and my mother had a sprained ankle. There was a bump on my head, but except for those too fairly minor injuries, we were all OK.
Both cars were ruined, and me missed the funeral, but we were glad we weren't having any funerals of our own. Howard
