FQ2: fairly early, wandering around looking for things

I gave up reading through the archives after 45 pages. I really hope this isn't re-asking a question that's already been asked. Then again, I've seen a lot of that in those 45 pages, so maybe it's not so frowned upon here.

The mermaid wants a brush now, and I'm not sure where to look.
I tried visiting the bird, but no combination of actions could get past her to grab the feather.
No amount of pulling is getting that nail out of the tree.
Also, where can I find something to hold sap in?
I imagine the unicorn could do for the tree what she's done before, but I can't figure out how to entice her over there.
I've given the soothsayer five or six coins, but I imagine I will find more in the process of finding the above.
Now I'm wandering around figuring I've missed something.
