Volcano in Fantasy Quest 1

So I went into the volcano twice. The first time,
I got out via the balcony and gave the dollar bill
to the dude at the store, who gave me the oil.
Then, I used the oil on the drawbridge to get
out the second time. Now I go back in (having
gotten the password to the second rainbow
door from the soothsayer) and I can't jump into
the volcano:
You jump......and the volcano erupts, blowing
you sky high!

Apparently the Float Ring has stopped
working or something. o_O;;;
