Phonephobia is not uncommon. I've had it all my life. When I was a kid and had a paper route, the printing press broke down so often they suggested that we call to see if the papers were ready before coming downtown. So one day I picked up the phone and when the operator* said, Number please," I said, "Are the papers off the press?"

She gasped and said, "What?" and I hung up. I think I've had phonephobia ever since.

I also think I gave up trying to become a journalist when I found that being a reporter required lots and lots of phone calls.

So I married a secretary and we had two daughters and I hardly ever used the phone after that.
