Thank you for posting that. I thought I was a LOTR heretic and didn't dare speak my mind. Yes, his facial expression always bothered me. It's a cross between a squint and a I'm-knitting-my-eyebrows-into-a-shape-that-no-other-human-can-make face. He's a good actor (at least, to my mind he is), it's just that facial expression drives me up the wall. I don't remember seeing it in any of his other movies, though. So maybe it is just the director:

Jackson: CUT! Hey, Elijah! You're in a lot of ANGUISH right now. You need to get that across to the viewer. You're climbing up MT. DOOM, for crying out loud. Make that squinty-funky-eyebrow face. That'll work on 'em every time.

Wood: Right, Peter. I'll get on that right away.
