When I was in high school,* I took a year of typing and my top speed was in the 25 to 30 range. They had a bad habit of subrtacting a word for each typo, so I may have hit 35 or 40 a time or two. I got a passing grade, probably because I would stay after class and see that all the typewriters were covered. Then I would empty the wastebaskets. There were 30 wastebaskets, one for each typewriter. I also replaced a ribbon from time to time.

But before you laugh at 25 words a minute, try a speed test on a manual typewriter. That was state-of-the-art in those days.*
