You can get something else from the well, and not even by going down into it. I think this item is also what you need to get up the cliff (although I could be wrong. You do need it in other places, anyway).

Basically, you should take any item the game gives you the option to take. (This applies to everything, in fact. Click on every option, everywhere you go. That is the only way you will make progress.)
