Yeah, you can only open the gate from the other side. (It's the same gate from the Enchanted Forest in FQ1.) You at least have what you need to get in the forest the other way - past the cyclops.
As for the creature just past him, though... the soothsayer will give you a hint about vanity that will eventually lead you to a solution. (Read: you're gonna need to trade a lot of items, and you forgot to get something from the old man in the castle.)
