Dragon in GOA

I'm in the caves, and I got past the wraith and went east. Now I have to either kill or get past the dragon, but I can do nothing. I am standing in the west section of the cavern, as close as I can to the exit. I just keep dodging until I can't, attack until I can dodge, and then repeat the process. I can't go around the dragon and flee west, and going south gets me nowhere. Every once in a while, I examine the dragon. it has been 'wounded by your blows' for ten minutes! What can I do?
