TOA bug? (*Spoilers*)

I found this when I played TOA for the first time and had to restart the game to beat it. I started it again to see if I could find a way around the 'bug' but I still can't.

If you eat the bacon sandwich (which passes time) BEFORE you do the job for the teacher that gives you the dinner party invite, then you're stuck wandering around w/ nothing to do. The teachers have all left but you can't get into the dinner party. Bug? or have I missed something (which is highly likely)?
