Can't argue with that. "Piano Man" and "Allentown" are two songs that I cannot turn off when I hear them come on the local classic rock station. Nonetheless, there are other bands that I prefer to Billy Joel. Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Van Halen, The Beatles, Queen, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, all are great bands. You know the old desert island question: If you could only take one CD with you to a desert island, what would it be? I'd take "Vs." by Pearl Jam, although "Echoes" by Pink Floyd makes me hesitate in my decision.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again: I prefer music in which the words and the music mean something. I think two of the best examples of this are "American Pie" by Don McLean (which is my singular all-time favorite song) and "Alive" by Pearl Jam. The former bemoans the Buddy Holly airplane accident and the changing style of music in the day, and the second is about Eddie Vedder being told his father is not who he thought he was. I am a big lyric person: I like lyrics that say something: thus why I am so partial to bands like Pearl Jam or Pink Floyd, because when you read the lyrics, they're more than just simply "Baby I love you" over and over again, like today's "popular" music. And Billy Joel is one of those type artists: one whose lyrics *mean* something.
The Other "I'm done now." Matthew
