Arguably John Wayne's most entertaining latter day film, True Grit tells the story of Rooster Cogburn, one of the most memorable characters from the waning years of the western genre. Gruff, unrefined, but with his heart in the right place, Cogburn is a marshall getting on in years. His reputation as a criminal-catcher is unsurpassed, but he handles a girl named Mattie Ross less effectively. She enlists his aid -- practically forces him to help her -- and that's where the adventure begins. What follows is a character-driven action film full of guns, attitude, and a livelihood about it that makes you want to root for the heroes.
