The Bells of St. Mary's, a worthy sequel to Going My Way and better in some ways, has the uncanny ability to break your heart and uplift it at the same time. Like Going My Way, it features an interlocking series of subthreads, all concerning the involvement of Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) at a Catholic School. One, involving the health of Mother Superior (Ingrid Bergman) hinges on a contrivance, but this does not dampen its impact.
Good songs, endearing characters, and delightful dialogue make this a real treat. Watch for the Christmas play scene, which is surely one of the cutest things ever filmed.
