Rambo III is as much of a remake of its predecessor as its sequel. This time John Rambo is singlehandedly defeating Russians in Afghanistan, rather than Russians and Vietnamese in Vietnam, and he's rescuing his own commander, Colonel Trautman, rather than nameless American prisoners of war. But he still mows down entire armies, dodges machine gun fire, has dogfights in helicopters, and spends time getting in and out of enemy hands. Rambo: First Blood Part II was hokey but had its moments; Rambo III is just tired.
