This sequel recreates the look but not the feel of the classic 1982 ghost movie. There are a lot of flickering lights and ghastly creatures but no sense of wonder, and the only time the film manages to get under the skin is during a single wonderfully creepy scene in which Julian Beck, playing a sinister old preacher, pays the Freeling family a neighborly visit. It is telling that, during this scene, there isn't a special effect in sight.
