O Brother, Where Art Thou? is more of the Coen Brothers' weird brand of comedy. It is more cohesive than The Big Lebowski, which I did not especially care for, but it lacks the freshness and audacity that distinguished their earlier comedies, such as Raising Arizona and The Hudsucker Proxy. While this is an admittedly hilarious little romp around southern backwoods America, what purpose does it serve? It works best as simple escapism, I think; take what happens at face value and laugh if you are, as I am, eccentric enough to find it funny. Unfortunately, several scenes are miscalculated and, instead of being weirdly funny, are just plain weird. Then again, maybe I'm just not eccentric enough.
