The biggest problem with the majority of Michael Crichton's work is that his characters are decidedly flat. That's especially evident in this jungle adventure that tries to be the next Jurassic Park. It's not, but that's not to say it's wasted celluloid, either. While caring for the characters may be a lost cause, their perilous quest in to the heart of the jungle isn't. Adventure, tension, horror, high-tech action, and special effects are the highlights of this one, and as that, Congo succeeds. It's also a nice self-parody. Familiarity with the jungle epics of old will help in appreciating Congo's silly fun. Just try to ignore the insipid talking gorilla subplot.
