There is a caveat, however. When you run away from combat, your monster companions won't follow you; they'll be left behind to be slaughtered by your enemies. Murkon has no moral compunction about abandoning his minions to certain doom, but before you direct Murkon to run away from combat, make sure this will not be a strategic error.
The other important thing to know about running from combat is that -- unlike in Murkon's Refuge -- you always run back in the direction you came from.
A checkpoint will disappear once you run into it, so you want to space out your usage of any available checkpoints so that you don't run out of them. Also note that if there are parties on the level that are partially wounded but still alive, they'll get a chance to restore themselves to full health if you hit a checkpoint.
