Speed set the promise of Sandra Bullock's career to astronomical heights, and While You Were Sleeping confirmed it. Here, she not only proves she is one of the few actresses in Hollywood who can carry a movie on her own, but also that she's quite talented, portraying such a real, tangible character, it's almost impossible to be unable to relate with her. This endearing romantic comedy is about a shy woman with no family and no friends outside of her job as a ticket-taker at a train station. She sees a man who takes the train every day and, while trying to work up the courage to speak to him, abruptly finds herself, through a peculiar series of events, amongst his family. One of the best parts of this film is how realistically it portrays a large, close-knit family who enjoy each other's company, and the unexpected joy Bullock's character feels at suddenly being a part of that interaction that they themselves take for granted. Without saying any more, suffice it to say that While You Were Sleeping about as funny, pleasant, and heartwarming as a movie can be. The skillful direction, witty script, and Bullock's performance all help make this the best romantic comedy in recent memory and one of the greatest ever made.
