This mildly engaging film noir, starring Edmond O'Brien, Ella Raines, William Bendix, and Vincent Price, has a reliable noir plot, which I won't go into lest I spoil it. It involves murder and intrigue and double crosses and an array of deliciously unsavory characters. However, the plot's twists are entirely too visible too far in advance: it diffuses the suspense when we know how the villain will outdo himself ahead of time. Nevertheless, fans of the genre may find enough in this to warrant a viewing. Of particular note is the acting job by William Bendix, who plays a smart but unsympathetic cop.
