In the late thirties and forties, haunted house comedies were popular, but few were very good, because they relied on a standard set of cliches and most of the humor was in watching people get scared. Not so with The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which is more a romantic comedy than a haunted house flick, because the film's crux is its characters and the marvelous chemistry between Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney in the two title roles. The dialogue is crisp, and the cinematography stark; all told, an upstanding, entertaining film.
