This solid John Wayne western pairs the Duke up with Stuart Whitman (miscast), who plays a gambler under arrest. Initially, they are at odds, but circumstances eventually put them on the same side and under pressure to trust each other. While the plot synopsis sounds like routine formula, the film's scope is much broader, including a host of supporting characters and subplots that defy predictability. Some aspects are stronger than others, but the whole is a fine piece of entertainment.
