Lately, the big production made-for-TV mini-series are bloated and silly. The 10th Kingdom was a pleasant surprise; it's not bloated, even at approaching eight hours, and it knows it's silly, so it feels free to sit back and have fun. It's also refreshingly original and creative. The premise has a father and daughter from the "real world" stumbling upon the magical fairy land of the Nine Kingdoms, in which the fairy tales of Snow White, Cinderella, and others actually occurred. A wicked step-mother is once again wreaking sinister plots, and it's up to our heroes to stop them. Unfortunately, there are complications. The step-mother has sent a band of annoying trolls after them, and a man-wolf (Scott Cohen, delivering the show's craziest and most entertaining performance) is on their tails, too. It's surprising that this mini-series is so engaging, particularly given how downright silly it can be. But engaging it is.
