A weird, turbulent heartbreaker, Sophie's Choice is a brilliantly acted, moving story of a southern writer (Peter MacNicol) and the bizarre couple who live in the apartment above him. The story takes place after World War II; the woman (Meryl Streep) is a Polish survivor of a German concentration camp. The kooky man (Kevin Kline) is credited with saving her life after sickness and depression nearly had the better of her. But there are tragic secrets and buried wounds, and the two can't quite seem to escape the past. This film has much to say, much that is complex and yet said so uniquely and eloquently.
