After There's Something About Mary, the Brothers Farrelly toned down a bit (just a bit) for Shallow Hal, a frequently abrasive comedy that nevertheless manages to be touching at the same time. It's about a guy who places an inordinate amount of emphasis on the way people look until a hypnotist does him a favor and makes him only able to see internal beauty. This leads to comic situations where what he sees isn't what his friends see. Amusing stuff, and underneath it all are some thoughtful observations about how successful we are at applying objective standards of beauty to what is more appropriately a subjective call.
