Robert Mitchum was made for film noir. Out of the Past, one of Mitchum's best films, is also one of the best the film noir genre ever produced. Kirk Douglas asks Mitchum to find his girlfriend (Jane Greer) who shot him, apparently stole a large sum of money, and took off. From there, the plot twists fly fast and furious.
