I've seen Robin Williams play a lot of roles, both comedic and dramatic, both good ones and bad ones. At his best, he is fantastic. But One Hour Photo was the first time I became so absorbed in his character that I forgot I was watching Robin Williams and not Sy the Photo Guy. He inhabits this complex character completely, without any of his familiar mannerisms. It is probably his best performance to date.

The film is a psychological thriller. There is little action, and what action there is seems out of place. It builds suspense subtly, taking its time to establish the character and his life and showing us things that appear normal, yet don't quite feel right. There is something terrible lurking under the surface, and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

One of the nice things about this film is that it's about something. Sy works at the one hour photo place at "SavMart." He appears to be the only person there who takes pride in his job. He understands the importance of family photographs. He knows what they mean, and, moreover, he knows what they say about the people in front of and behind the camera.

This film is not for everyone. It is creepy and disturbing, and Williams' performance may be too good for some. Others may find it too slow. Personally, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
