Only the second film ever to win all four major Academy Awards (best actor, actress, director, and picture). The cast turns in admirable performances; the dialogue is intelligent; the story, about society's pressure to conform, is multi-layered and ripe with symbolism; and the result is prime fodder for art critics, film instructors, and compulsive intellectuals. Unfortunately, there isn't much here for anyone else. I appreciated the film on an intellectual level only. Emotionally, I wasn't much moved until the belated final act.
