Ever since Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, political comedies have generally been expected to make some editorial statements about society and the state of the world in the undercurrent of the comedy. To put it bluntly, My Fellow Americans has nothing to say to anyone, and, ironically, this is to the film's credit. My Fellow Americans makes no pretense to have any purpose beyond the provision of laughter, and because it knows this from the outset, it does not deviate from the pursuit of its singular goal of hilarity. It meets and exceeds that goal and remains on the winning end of the inevitable comparisons with the Grumpy Old Men series. Jack Lemmon and James Garner, two ex-Presidents from opposing parties, are as funny and charismatic as they ever were. It's not great cinema. It is a lot of fun.
