Nia Vardolos wrote and stars in this romantic comedy that is enough smarter and fresher than its peers that it surpasses its genre. Admittedly, this is almost a one-joke comedy, namely, "Being Greek is hard core," but there is such truth and heart in the humor, and the characters are so colorful, that darned if it doesn't carry us through to the end and leave us wanting more. The weak link is the non-Greek man that our heroine falls for: the character needs to be the straight man to her family's Greekness, but must he be so bland?
