Mumford is one of the subtlest, slyest, and most confident comedies I've seen in a long time. It's fresh material, for one thing; it's not yet another formula sitcom with all the same recycled jokes and predicaments. As such, it's hard to stop watching this hilarious episodic story of a small town psychologist with an uncertain background. Loren Dean plays the lead -- Dr. Mumford of Mumford -- and he is impeccably cast. Dean delivers every line exactly as it should be, which is no small feat for this kind of comedy, where tone and timing are critical. In fact, the whole cast is outstanding, as is director Lawrence Kasdan. This is one of those special works of collaborative art where the creative minds of those involved just seem to click together.
