Lifeboat (1944)

This great Alfred Hitchcock film adapts John Steinbeck's novel as only the Master could. It's the penultimate example of Hitchcock's experimentation with a confined setting. The film opens on the wreckage of a sea battle with a German U-Boat; one by one, the few survivors climb aboard a lifeboat. When one turns out to be a German, the tension on board goes through the roof. This is a wonderful (and underrated) piece of filmmaking, with first rate performances all around. Think Hitchcock's trademark cameo can't be done with a setting like this? Think again.
