I am torn in my critical evaluation of this direct-to-video production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I don't particularly like the play. It's too shallow, too simplistic. There's some neat music in it that makes fun of a number of different recent musical eras, but the retelling of the biblical story of Joseph is such a cursory rendition that it fails to engage. It's telling that the narrator has the largest role. It's astonishing that God is written out of the story.
However, I did like this production of the play. The performers are well chosen and have a great time hamming it up. The sets and props range from cute to funny, and, of course, the songs are catchy. I couldn't help but have fun with this production. I don't think I'll make a particular effort to see it again, but I'm glad I saw it once.
