Head Above Water is a funny, sometimes uproarious black comedy starring Cameron Diaz and, in a surprisingly effective comedic role, Harvey Keitel. I had no been previously exposed to Keitel's comic abilities prior to viewing this film; some of the funniest moments are derived from his ability to play the eternal victim of freak chance. All the performances work well, in fact, and the story is outrageous and devilishly clever. If there's a significant flaw, it's that we don't really care about the characters. Then again, perhaps that's a blessing in disguise; if we did, this movie just might be too painful to bear.
