This American remake of the 1955 French classic is a travesty on every level. It begins as a faithful remake, though without the detail of character and setting that would have held the story up. Gradually, it deteriorates further until it winds up as a laughably ludicrous and utterly suspenseless exercise in everybody trying to kill everybody else for inexplicable reasons. The film's solitary bright spot is an engaging performance by Kathy Bates, making something out of very little, but even her character is undermined by the end.
