The premise of this film is a seeming cliche: Whoopi Goldberg gets a job as a maid, working for a man whose wife died of cancer and whose daughter has become a recluse from the problem, and ends up helping them cope with their loss and filling empty spots in their lives. However, the resulting story makes for a pleasant, intelligent, moving film, that can either be viewed at face value or for its thought-provoking insights and social commentary. Watch for film great Don Ameche in a poignant role as Grandpa Harry. Ameche's acting career goes back to the thirties, when he played leading men in romantic comedies. He died before Corrina, Corrina was released, and it is dedicated to him. A fine honor.
