This early short film by Jean-Luc Godard is a delight. The balance between the two main characters is fascinating: Jean-Paul Belmondo, the boyfriend, has virtually all of the dialogue. He talks and talks, a jilted lover traversing a complicated but hilariously realistic range of emotions and attitudes without a single pause to make any conscious decisions. But the camera is not on him but Charlotte, played by Anne Collette, whose infectiously impish antics may or may not have been improvised but certainly look it. Collette is a joy to watch, Belmondo a joy to listen to, and everything culminates in a pitch-perfect ending.
