Rarely has such a great cast been used for so little. The three title characters are all played by women I like (Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu), and the supporting cast includes such names as Bill Murray, Crispin Glover, and Tim Curry. The watchable cast keeps this from being a complete lost cause, but what a waste is that? I'd rather the actors were busy making good movies better.
The problem is mostly that the director, "McG," doesn't seem capable of telling a story. He's got his Matrix imitation skills down, and he's pretty good at filming billowing hair, but the slick looking pieces are pasted together with insufferable segues, and the end result is something that doesn't know what it is or what it's doing. Worst of all is the frequent attempts at comic relief, nearly all of which misfire painfully.
Barrymore, Diaz, and Liu all have numerous fan sites on the Internet with galleries of glamorous pictures. They have almost as much to offer as this movie does. The movie offers just one thing more: it has, at times, charisma and personality. It's clear the cast is having fun. That doesn't make for a good movie, but, well, it's one step up from a photo gallery.
