Martin Scorsese and writer Nicholas Pileggi, who worked on Goodfellas together, reunite for Casino, another absurdly violent crime epic. This time it's about the mob running the casinos in Las Vegas. As Goodfellas, Casino paints a detailed world that is simultaneously seductive and repellent, filled with characters quite at home living foreign lifestyles with unfamiliar rules. But the film is less dramatically satisfying than Goodfellas and doesn't cut as deeply into the psychology of the characters. It's a good film, but not a great one, and, for me, not a particularly likeable one.
