Cain and Mabel (1936)

Reviews and Comments

A predictable but pleasant piece of fluff nostalgia, Cain and Mabel is the story of a dancer (Marion Davies) and a boxer (Clark Gable) who cross paths, don't like each other much, but then -- surprise -- end up falling in love. What elevates this story a notch above other musical retreads of this story is its sly wit. There's some clever dialogue here rarely found in the movies of today. Gable looks a little out of place in a musical spectacle, but he doesn't have any songs, and he looks comfortable enough.
