This baseball movie has a bit of a cult following by baseball fans. I can understand why, though there are better baseball movies. (This one, at least, doesn't follow the standard sports movie formula 90% of the others do.) For the rest of us, Bull Durham has almost nothing to offer. The humor is coarse, sparse, and induces only a tenuous smiles. The character drama, while more solid, involves characters we don't particularly care about nor can relate to. When the credits started rolling, I reflected on why the movie had moved me so little. I realized that it didn't matter to me one bit what happened -- everybody could have died for all I'd care.
