Reviews and Comments

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was a big commercial success for the comedy team, and it proved to be arguably their best film. Thus, it was inevitable that more would follow along the same lines. With Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the title says it all. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are played eerily by the incomparable Boris Karloff. As with the other entries in this series, comedy is achieved without turning the monster itself into a buffoon.

But how much can you do with so simple a formula? By Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, there wasn't a whole lot left to do with the idea except more of the same -- have Costello run into the monster and get demonstratively scared. This episode reminded me of Scooby Doo -- Abbott and Costello continually split up to look for the monster, scaredy-cat Costello is always the one who finds him, but no one believes him.
