Danny Kaye stars in this musical remake of the classic screwball comedy, Ball of Fire. In the original, the secluded group of professors were compiling an encyclopedia; here, they are studying music. Two men off the street introduce them to a new style of music that has come into popularity without their notice, namely jazz, and Kaye sets out to learn about this new genre. Like the original, the film is bound to its time by its subject matter, but this time mechanical storytelling and slow pacing fail to surmount that handicap. It's worthwhile only for the abundance of jazz music featured. Danny Kaye is unusually subdued in this film; the attempt to make something more serious than his usual material should be praised; the result should not. Unless you're a particular fan of jazz, pass this one up.
