This pleasant film, about the first women's baseball league that substituted for the men's during the war, is not anything obviously special -- but it has an appeal that sneaks up on you. Director Penny Marshall has a knack for that, actually, so it's no surprise. Nor is it surprising that the cast, led by Geena Davis and Tom Hanks, is fun to watch. I did, however, cringe at the sappy ending -- it hits the wrong notes too hard. Better to have wrapped the noble intentions in a blurb before the credits rolled and left it at that. But no matter; on the whole, this is a fine, endearing work.
